February 2010
  • In P6, we were working on name poems.  The idea was to take each letter of your first and last name and think of a word using each of those letters that described the individual.  One child was having problems with the letter “t” so I got out the big school dictionary.  We quickly scanned through the words that began with the letter “t” until we located the word “terrific.”  I put a ruler under this word and left him to write it, while I roamed around the room to help other students.   Before long I heard his frantic call to check his work.  I clearly bent over in hysteria when I discovered that he had written “termite.” - Ms. Forbes (Feb. 2010)
  • Ms. Grandbois:  “For our Valentine’s Day party this afternoon we’ll watch a movie from when I was a kid.  Student:  “Is it a silent movie?” (Feb. 2010)

January 2010

  • In our classroom, we are coloring pictures of Daruma-sans as a way to create New Year’s Resolutions.  In Japan, people make a wish on a Daruma-san, an egg-shaped doll with a determined face and blank eyes.  People give him or her the “gift of sight” by painting in one eye.   In our class, this eye is painted so we can see a goal we want to accomplish.  When the wish is granted, or the resolution is achieved, the other eye of the Daruma-san is painted in. One student wrote (and allowed for editing since it was his goal) the following New Year’s Resolution: "This year, I want to spill betre (spell better).” :) - Ms. Eisenrich (Jan. 2010)
  • When a 3rd grader finished her MAP test she announced: "I'm outa here!"  (Jan. 2010)
  • During P.E., students in Mr. Schultz's class were discussing information about the Big Climb.  In response to hearing that you climb 69 stories, a student raised their hand and asked, "Will we get suction cups?" thinking that we were climbing the outside! - 4th grader (Jan. 2010)
  • There's been some talk about having crushes amongst kindergartners in P2.  "You know, mommy... we invented 'crushes' in P2!" - Kindergartner (Jan. 2010)

December 2009
  • During Writer’s Workshop when I was conferencing with a 1st grade student I noticed that they had written “Wii” on their page.  While trying to find out more about the games he’d played, I was informed that “Wii” was actually “we” like “What we did together.” - from 1st grade teacher (Dec. 09)
  • What do you want for Christmas?  The Kindergartner replies, "Oh!  A white board, please, please please?!  Just like the kind my teacher has!" (Dec. 09)

  • Students were giving compliments to each other in our class meeting (Rm2) and when one student said they didn't know what they were doing on the weekend, another student said, "I hope you have fun whatever you do.  Hopefully it's not clothes shopping, because that is boring."   (Oct. 09)
