News:  No more Read-a-Million-Words calendars for the remainder of the school year.  Please turn in your April 30th calendar, so it can be counted in your yearly total!

Boxtops for Education
Thanks to all of you who have collected box tops this year.  So far, our school has collected 2,128 box tops this school year!  Keep looking for box tops to help buy library books.  P6 collected the most box tops by a class in the months of December and January.  P4 collected the most box tops in February! Read a Million Words (RAMW) - Reading Calendars available here
Research has shown that students who read or are read to at home become better readers!  We expect every child to read or be read to 20 minutes or more each day at home and to record those minutes on the calendar.

The reading
calendar is sent home with your child every month or can be downloaded from the Forms page of this websiteExtra calendars are also stored in the kiosk directly outside the office door.

The calendar should be signed by an adult with the minutes totaled and returned to the core class teacher the day after the calendar is completed.

Calendars are due at the end of every month.  Families can create their own calendars at home, which should include the following (without this, students do not get credi for their reading!):
  • Student’s name (first and last, printed)
  • Core class
  • Total minutes read
  • Parent’s signature (legibly written)
Thanks for making our volunteers’ jobs easier.  Families who read together, succeed together!

Introduction
I am happily starting my eighth year as librarian at Montlake.  Jim Dunnigan and I teach a class called Multi-media in which students in all grade levels use technology and printed materials to create multimedia projects.

I also work with students in Read Naturally, a computer software program that helps students increase their reading fluency.

I lead students in grades one through five in Junior Great Book discussions in which students must use critical thinking to discuss literature.

Prior to my years as Montlake School’s librarian, I taught fourth and fifth graders for six years as part of Team 3.  I have also taught grades two through 6 at Brighton Elementary in Seattle and at schools in Tampa, Florida.

I had a wonderful experience this summer riding my bike on the Courage Classic, which is a three day bike ride across Snoqualmie, Blewett, and Stevens Passes.  The ride is a fundraiser for Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital Foundation which intervenes in cases of child abuse.  Not only was this a worthy cause, but a fun and scenic ride.  I enjoyed all the training bike rides I did to prepare, too!
