Ms. Lori Yorde - P4

lhyorde@seattleschools.org

News:  Mrs. Yorde has been talking about eagles with the kids, and they have watched this webcam (link below) a few times.  We watched after school today and were lucky to see the parent feeding the baby; it was amazing!  This is live from Hornby Island, near Vancouver Island.  Enjoy!  http://www.hornbyeagles.com/webcam.htm

Spring is here and the students in P-4 are in full bloom.  This is the time of year a kindergarten teacher says, “Wow, look what they can do!”  The improvement in reading, writing, and math is dramatic.

Our “100 Ways of Caring” food drive was a big success. The University Food Bank was the recipient of 87 food items donated by P-4 families. This experience was one way to show the kids that if we all contribute a little we can make a big difference in our community.

Our class was happy to have our City University intern, Molly Sisson, with us since November.  Ms. Sisson added so much fun and enthusiasm to our class. We wish her the absolute best as she begins her career in the education of young children.

April and May Themes

Friendship: Anti-bully behavior and responsible playground behavior

Spring: we will use our senses to notice the changes in our neighborhood

Pet care: what animals are good pets and how do we care for them

Favorite animals: Mrs. Wishy Washy’s books will inspire our learning about farm animals

Math:  arithmetic (sums and differences 1-10),  2 and 3-D shapes, fractions, 100’s chart, data collecting and graphing

Science: wood: the goal is to become familiar with the properties of wood, make good observations, ask good questions and record what is learned with drawings and writing.

Introduction

I’ve taught school for as long as I’ve lived in Seattle, 23 years.  This is my eighth year at Montlake.  I am happy to be working in a community committed to the education of all students.

Philosophy

P-4 Kindergarteners are active learners; language rich, meaningful and high interest activities fill their day.  The use of books, songs, movement, dramatics, hands-on investigation, and motivating materials are used across the curriculum.

The social and emotional development of every P-4 student is considered as important as their academic growth.  As the children play together and work together, they learn to show empathy and concern for one another.  P-4

Kindergartners are great students who value school, friendships and themselves.
