Accelerated Readers

Every child is now in the 100 Book Club , 14 in the 200 Book Club, 8 in the 300 Book Club, 3 in the 400, and 2 in the 500.  We have only two more students who have not reached their goal, and soon we’re going to have mass hysteria when this occurs.

We have also just started Junior Great Books which is an awesome tool for teaching upper level thinking skills.  Be on the lookout for your child’s book and assignment each Friday, from now until the end of the year.  It requires about a half hour of work every weekend.  It is essential that the book is returned on Monday with work completed.

Here are the long awaited Accelerated Reading lists.  One is in alphabetical order and the other one by grade level.  I hope they will be helpful!  When your child reads an AR book at home, be sure to write down the title and send it to school with your child.  It is important that they let me know so that I make sure they don't forget to take the test.

Homework

Homework goes home on Mondays and should be returned on Thursdays.  My number one criteria is neatness.

Weekend Reading goes home on Fridays and comes back on Mondays (no exceptions, please!).  It is the student's job to read their selections to their parent, and it's the parents' job to initial the back of each piece.  You do not have to re-read the old selections.

Reminders

  • Please provide non-sugar snack about once a month.
  • Please note that we have students who are severely allergic to certain foods - no nuts, eggs, kiwi, and seaweed, please!
  • Please remember your child is responsible for bringing his folder to school everyday and returning it home each afternoon, even if it is empty.
  • We celebrate your child's birthday or half-year birthday with songs, a little present and some games.
  • Book orders will come home about once a month.
  • Read to Succeed calendars need to be turned in twice each month.
  • Box Tops for Education - we are collecting them in our classroom in a large container so that Ms. Hare will be able to purchase additional books for our library.
Introduction

Hi!  I’m Maurine Forbes the P6, K-1 teacher.  It seems like I’ve always been a part of Seattle Public Schools.  First as a student, and then a teacher for over 25 years – 11 of which have been at Montlake.  My husband, who is also an educator, and I also watched our three daughters graduate from Seattle Public Schools.

My love of teaching was a part of me from an early age when I used to play teacher in my basement.  I’ve always believed that if you make school fun, show you care, set high expectations and motivate students to do their best, the results will be nothing but amazing.

My Philosophy

My advice to parents is to emphasize to their children the importance of being a responsible student, an attentive listener and a commendable worker.  More than any other these three factors are the key to success in the classroom.

Finally, I would like to suggest that parents regularly ask what they can do to make their child’s learning experience more successful.  I recommend at least once a year visiting the classroom during basic skills time to actually see children in action.  This provides the best opportunity for parents to develop a clearer picture of their child’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as an appreciation for their child’s accomplishments.
