News:
Montlake Elementary and Cascade Bicycle Club Education
Foundation invite you to join our team for Bike to School Month, May
2010!
May is Bike to School Month, designed to
encourage bicycle commuting and mentor new riders. Registration is due to Mrs. Goubert by April 28th!
Download registration form here: .doc, .pdf
When you cycle to school with your child
you:
- Create daily exercise
habits that help keep your child active and healthy.
- Reduce
car traffic and air pollution.
- Help
your child become a competent and independent cyclist.
We envision participation in
Bike-to-School Month as a family project, one that may also introduce parents
to the fun of cycling with their kids!
Everyone who
rides at least once wins a prize!
Because every child cannot cycle safely to school, and because the
“work” that kids do also includes sports, music lessons, trips to the library,
play dates, etc…, trips for Bike to School Month can include any trip made by
bicycle somewhere your child needs to go, round-trip.
So, how do you participate?
It's
easy! Fill out the Bike to School
sign up flyer (see above link) and return to school by April 28th. Extra copies are in the gym. Once
it is filled out and turned in, you’ll receive more information and Bike to
School materials including safety and bike check information (can be viewed on
CBC web-site: http://www.cbcef.org/bts/index.html)
For more information please contact Mrs.
Goubert @ smgoubert@seattleschools.org
or check out Cascade Bicycle Club’s website at http://www.cbcef.org/bts/index.html.
5 For Life
Our P.E. classes follow the
“5 For Life!” curriculum, adopted by Seattle Public Schools, for students to
achieve state and national standards in physical education. The “5 For
Life!” curriculum focuses on five components of fitness: Cardiorespiratory Endurance,
Flexibility, Muscular Endurance, Muscular Strength, and Body Composition and
their relationship to a lifetime of positive fitness and healthy habits.
Students participate in
regular physical activity and goal setting relative to the 5 fitness components.
This past Fall, students took pretests to have baseline measure for
each. Students engage in games and practice opportunities to track and
develop their individual progress throughout the year. At the end of the
year, we’ll do post testing. Below are the 5 components with the
respective activity used for measurement.
-
Cardiorespiratory Endurance: Mile run
-
Flexibility: Sit and Reach
-
Muscular Endurance: Sit Ups
-
Muscular Strength Push Ups
-
Body Composition: Height & Weight
Yoga
In addition, yoga is
incorporated in class to transition from the classroom to the gym or field and
to promote flexibility, strength, balance, and stress reduction. Specifically,
in each class we “take a minute for you.” For one minute, students are
asked to sit comfortably & focus on resting their minds and ignoring
noises. Sometimes the minute is spent on a particular thought: How
I will have a good afternoon, or What I am happy about? Sometimes
it’s just to give them a quiet break! Students have commented how taking
this small amount of time for themselves makes them feel calm, think clearly,
or feel happier. Try it at home with them-it really works!
Help Your Child
Please help your child by being sure they are prepared for
PE class by:
-
Ensuring they are wearing comfortable and safe shoes. Please
avoid flip-flops or big/rain boots.
-
Making sure they know how to tie shoes. If they do not,
it’s a good time to start learning!
-
Writing a note if they have an injury that we should be aware
of!
You can view your child's Specialist/PCP class schedule here.
Encourage your child to show you what they are learning in class. Use
what they are learning in class or activities you enjoy to keep
everyone in your family moving!
Energetically Yours,
Susan Goubert
