Dear Montlake Community,
As the Kindergartners will tell you, we’ve recently passed
the 100th day of school!
These weeks between mid-winter break and spring break may seem quiet,
but school and the PTA remain busy.
Here are some recent and upcoming highlights:
- Annual Fund. Thanks to our 170 donors, including 80 Montlake families, the PTA's Annual Fund Campaign raised just over %67,000 to go toward staffing and other vital school programs. Special thanks to Deborah Phillips
and Bob Bernstein for heading the Fund.
- Auction. Now we’re preparing for our big annual
party – this year’s Pike Place Market - themed auction. There are many ways to be
involved with this fun and important event! Whether you contribute to a class basket, procure items from
local businesses, or donate one of your own creations, we hope you will join in
to make the auction an unforgettable experience (learn more).
- Under construction! As you may
have noticed, we just broke ground on a sustainable outdoor classroom in the
northeast corner of campus. This
outdoor gathering space is funded by a grant from Seattle’s Neighborhood
Matching Fund. The classroom is
one part of our Garden Link Project, which aims to strengthen community bonds
through children’s gardening events.
Parent Laura Gardner designed the space, working closely with the school
district, and alum parent Lisa Krober assisted Ms. Bloom with the landscape
planning. Urban Hardwood
generously donated logs to serve as benches. Ms. Lee is taking charge of the creation of birdhouses for
the new area. There will be many
more volunteer opportunities as we complete this project.
- Celebrations. Recently Montlake students celebrated
Chinese New Year – we are now in the year of the Tiger. The whole school also commemorated Dr.
Seuss’s birthday with a giant reading party. And next week students will celebrate Pi Day – where kids learn
about the number pi and see their teachers get pie in the face. And don’t miss our annual Family Game
Night on March 18!
Thank you once again for your
generous support. Montlake could
not be what it is without you.
Sincerely,
Lara Kreyenhagen and Liz Porter
Goals for 2009-2010- Fundraising - Our fundraising efforts support core educational activities, including teacher salaries, the greenhouse program, the technology program, the library program, student scholarships, the Junior Great Books literacy program, and educational stipends for teachers. We always need volunteers to help with our fundraising campaigns, such as our fall Annual Fund drive and our incredible spring auction.
- Enrichment - The PTA offers a range of before-and-after-school classes. This year we plan to begin Mandarin classes in addition to our fabulous French and Spanish programs! Other options include chess, Lego engineering, and music. We also host several evening events for parents and children, such as Pizza and Math Night.
- Communication - Working closely with Ms. Allan, we continue to monitor and disseminate up-to-date information about developments within the school and in the school district.
