Reading and WritingIn reading and writing, I use resources from The Comprehension Toolkit by Harvey and Goudvis, and the Writer's Workshop, by Lucy Calkins to help my students reach Washington state third grade performance expectations. Each approach reading and writing as a developmental process that allows students to be challenged at their own level, without being unduly frustrated.
MathThe Everyday Math Curriculum with daily math homework, and an on-line resource book and math games that families can access at home with a computer, is what I use to teach math. This curriculum, written by the University of Chicago, with supplemental work from Singapore Math has been adopted by the Seattle School district so elementary students can reach Washington state math performance expectations.
ScienceIn Science, I teach expository writing in conjunction with National Science Foundation kits. These are supplied by the Seattle school district to engage students in an inquiry-based learning experience of Rocks and Minerals, Sound, and Plant Growth and Development. Science and Social studies is taught to second and third graders in core class. This year I am supplementing our science unit through a social studies exploration of the Pacific Rim Coast, and the "Ring of Fire."
