Student Activities 2009-2010

These are activities that students at Montlake lead and manage themselves:

Student Council - Montlake Student Council began in 2009 with the goals of building community within our school and increasing school spirit. Student Council is a student run leadership group made up of 4th and 5th grade students.  Some of the roles of Student Council include planning spirit days and activities, promoting positive behaviors within our school community, and other activities decided upon by the members.  Working on service projects in the larger community is a long-term goal of the Council.  Members of Student Council are expected to be role models and leaders in the school and will be responsible for communicating plans with the greater school community.  Meetings are held Thursdays after school from 3:30-4:15 and are overseen by Ms. Grandbois.

Green Times - The Green Times newsletter is written monthly by students in Room 4, Ms. Grandbois’ class.  Generally, new editions are published on the last Thursday of each month.  The newsletter began in 2008 in conjunction with Ms. Bloom, the greenhouse teacher.  Each month students work in small groups to research and write “green” articles that are related to the environment.  In addition, articles often include surveys of staff and students, recipes, and seasonal ideas and information.  Students also give regular updates on projects happening in the greenhouse and around the school that relate to these topics.

Penny Harvest - Student-driven fundraiser.  Students will collect funds and serve on a round-table to decide where the funds will go.  They will research and learn about pressing issues in our community and direct the money to where they feel it is most needed.
